Here are some tips for keeping your dog safe on July 4th:

• Keep your dog inside: This is the most important tip. Fireworks can be very frightening for dogs, and they may bolt if they get scared. Even a normally calm dog can become panicked by loud noises. If you must take your dog outside, keep them on a leash at all times.
• Create a safe space: If you’re going to be gone for a while, create a safe space for your dog to stay in while you’re gone. This could be a crate, a quiet room, or even the bathroom. Make sure the space is escape-proof and that there is nothing in there that your dog could chew on or injure themselves with. You can also leave a long-lasting chew toy or puzzle feeder in the space to help keep your dog occupied.
• Desensitize your dog to loud noises: If you know your dog is afraid of loud noises, you can start desensitizing them to them a few weeks before July 4th. There are a number of resources available online and from pet trainers that can help you with this.
• Keep your dog away from fireworks and grills: Fireworks and grills can both be dangerous for dogs. Fireworks can cause burns, and grills can cause burns and heatstroke.
• Don’t give your dog human food: There are a number of human foods that are toxic to dogs, including grapes, onions, and chocolate. Be especially careful about leaving out plates or bowls of food unattended.
• Make sure your dog is microchipped and has a collar with ID tags: If your dog does get lost, a microchip and ID tags will greatly increase the chances of them being returned to you.
