These larger Airedales are Annie and Teddy, located in San Diego, California.

The first time Airedales were imported to North America was in the 1880s, and the American Kennel Club officially recognized the breed in 1888. Apart from hunting small animals, the Airedale has also been used on hunts for larger game and as police dogs, war dogs and family guardians.

The Airedale Terrier played a particularly important role during World War I, carrying messages to soldiers behind enemy lines and finding injured soldiers. However, its popularity in the U.S. has declined in the following years. Personally, I believe one of the factors affecting their popularity declined, was the increase in popularity for Golden Retrievers, Labradors and the crossbreed various doodles.

An average male Airedale can measure up to 23 inches and weigh anything from 50 to 70 pounds, with the female a little smaller.

But, the larger Airedale Terriers, also known as Mountain Airedales, Oorang Airedales, or just plain big Airedales, as their name implies, are substantially larger than the breed standard.

The larger male Airedale can easily weigh between 80 and 120 pounds! Having owned both the regular size Airedales and three of the larger size Airedales, I can say that their personalities and mannerisms are exactly the same, and I feel that the larger Airedale is really the ideal dog, not only for a companion but also for protection.

The Airedale has a coat of dense, harsh hair, with a softer and shorter undercoat. The standard coloring is tan with a black or drizzle saddle. The back is straight, and the tail fluffy, long and erect.

He is swift, formidable, graceful, big of brain, an ideal chum and guard. ….To his master he is an adoring pal. To marauders he is a destructive lightning bolt.”

  1. Did you bring your Airedale’s to Penticton, B. C.? My daughter saw some at the hockey rink and wondered if they were yours.
They lost their last Great Dane last year and are thinking of getting another one but they love my airedale and always have her when I go away so I thought the Orang would be the perfect dog for them.
    Would appreciate a reply.
