After the First World War, the Airedales’ popularity rapidly increased thanks to stories of their bravery on the battlefield and also because Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, and Warren Harding owned Airedales.

President Harding’s Airedale, Laddie Boy, was the “first celebrity White House pet”. President Harding had a special chair hand carved for him to sit on at very important Cabinet meetings. The Airedale Terrier is named after the river Aire, which runs through the surrounding valleys that this breed first originated from in Yorkshire England. The area was said to have a bigger problem with rats than usual so these larger dogs begin to become the Terrier of choice with the locals. The Airedale Terrier dog breed that is the largest of the Terriers , Probably descended from the Otterhound and the extinct Old English terrier. It stands about 23 in. (58 cm) high, weighs 40-50 lbs and has a boxy appearance, with a long, squared muzzle.

Airedale Terriers Are Great Swimmers

The Airedale Terrier was bred from a Welsh Terrier and an Otterhound, the breed has also been called the Waterside Terrier, because it was bred originally to hunt otters in and around the valleys of the River Aire. So, a good swimming ability has been bread into the Airedale.
