Happy Valentine’s Day – Mountain Airedales

Living with Mountain Airedales

All Airedale Terriers have great dispositions and are easily trained.

The Airedale Terrier, the largest member of the terrier group, is known to admirers as the King of Terriers. They have broad versatility, intelligence, and unswerving loyalty. These Mountain Airedales (also known as Oorang Airedales) are a sub-breed of the standard Airedale Terrier and were bred to be a much larger size. Airedale – Halloween

Airedale Terriers are never thought of as being a scary dog!

But, sometimes under the right conditions, and just on October 31, one might encounter a scary Airedale!

Oorang Airedales

The Airedale Terrier is named after the river Aire, which runs through the surrounding valleys that this breed first originated from in Yorkshire England. The area was said to have a bigger problem with rats than usual so these larger dogs begin to become the Terrier of choice with the locals. The Airedale Terrier usually lives to be around 13 years old but they are known to suffer from genetic defects including problems with their hips and eyes. Continue reading “Oorang Airedales”

Here is a good video as an introduction to the Airedale Terrier breed.

Personally, I’m on my third Airedale… They’ve all been terrific, but my current one, Oakley is far and away the best!

Oakley, is a Mountain Airedale also known as an Oorang Airedale.

All these two names really do is designate that this type of Airedale is much larger than the official AKC sanctioned Airedale size. My first two Airedale’s for the regular size and now having the larger size ( Oakley is about 85 pounds) I personally believe this is the ideal size for this type of dog.

I occasionally read comments to the effect that there is no such thing as a Oorang Airedale or Mountain Airedale. His efforts resulted in the King Oorang breed of Airedale dogs. Lingo described the King Oorang as the “world’s great all-around dog.”

Oorang Airedale Terrier

Here is Oakley, my Oorang Airedale Terrier at 3.5 years old. Of the three Airedales I have owned, Oakley is my first Oorang and by far the smartest of my Airedales. He loves his five day per week walk up Cowles Mountain here in San Diego.

Oakley has been a dad twice now and is looking for another bitch for a little get-together. If any readers out there have a female AKC Oorang Airedale within traveling distance of San Diego, contact me.
