The Cowles Mountain trail that starts at Barker Way is perhaps the best San Diego dog hiking trail. After being closed since mid-March for the coronavirus, Cowles Mountain hiking trails opened up about two weeks ago.

My two larger Airedale Terriers are also known as Oorang Terriers, larger Airedales, and Mountain Airedales. Now, I’m not quite sure if the Mountain Airedale nickname refers to their size or the fact that they love to go hiking up mountains. But I can attest to the fact that having had five larger Airedale Terriers, all of which have hiked up the Barker Way trail with me numerous times, they just love to get out and hike all the trails around San Diego. But, also the fact is that for certain groups DNA test can also determine whether you have the genes for certain specific diseases. For the general public the tests that are widely available are just for determining lineage.

Now you might be asking yourself where my going with this, and I just wanted to say for dogs especially specific purebred dogs, there’s a big enough database to be pretty accurate in not only determining the lineage but also being very precise in determining whether your pet carries a specific gene for certain breed-specific ailments.

With the AKC registered dogs, there’s not much that can be gained from a DNA test just for lineage. This is because the AKC gives you a certificate when your dog is registered showing you the exact lineage of your pet. But, with that said there are several companies that also test for breed-specific ailments.

Teddy – large Airedale Terrier puppy

As some of you may already know our large Airedale Oakley, passed on just before his 11th birthday this past August. Annie and Oakley were the first time we ever had two Airedales. After Oakley went over the rainbow bridge I occasionally thought about getting another Airedale puppy.

A couple of months ago I had put a deposit down on an a male Airedale puppy that was just a few weeks old at the time. But, unfortunately the breeder became ill and their partner wanted to keep that male puppy. Both Judy and I were sad that this little puppy which we thought was coming to our home was now staying with the breeder.

About three weeks ago, I received information that there were three larger size Airedale puppies back in the Midwest that were available. After reviewing the breeders information and checking the AKC lineage, and naturally quite a few photos of the puppy, we decided to make the commitment and provide Annie with an adopted brother.
