9 week old Airedale Terrier puppy leaves for Montana
Judi and I say goodby to Mabel, the first of our female Airedale puppies to be selected and the last of Annie’s nine puppies to leave our care.
When Mabel’s brother Barnaby left and she was all alone (naturally Annie was still here), you could tell right away that she was sad. After all, she had eight other siblings to play with, and then before she knew it, it was just her and her brother.

What we did was to turn the playpen into two separate pens. We left one, where it had always been since birth of the puppies in the living room, and we moved the other into my office, right behind my chair. This way, we could be by Mabel throughout the day.
This worked great and by the next day after her brother had left Mabel’s spirits had picked up. Also, we were lucky that it finally stopped raining for a couple days, and took Mabel out in the backyard with her mom.
An added benefit of the two pen idea was that for the last four days, Mabel only had one “oops” in housebreaking. But that one slip up was mainly my fault, because she whined early in the morning, and I knew she wanted to go out, but just couldn’t get dressed fast enough to get her in the backyard.
Another benefit of housesitting Mabel was the fact that Mabel and Annie got in a lot of quality mother-daughter interaction. I have a couple of videos showing this and will be eventually posting those showing Annie and Mabel playing together.
Mabel’s new human mom was well prepared for driving Mabel to her forever home. She had rented a new big suv that could handle any road conditions that they might encounter and also had tons of toys, supplies and the crate for Mabel to stay in on the long trip home.
From our house they headed up to Orange County where they spent the night, and then first thing in the morning, they’re on the road heading for Montana.
