Red Airedale Terrier

Red Airedale Terrier

Do you remember the first Ford automobiles that were produced? You could have any color you want as long as it was black! Well, many people believe the Airedale Terrier is just black and tan. Actually, there are all-black Airedales ( view my video of a black Airedale( https://airedale-terriers-oorang.com/airedale-terriers/black-airedale-terrier.html ) and also red Airedales!

As I said before, having owned three black and tan Airedales I’m partial toward the traditional coloring. But, with that said, and even with the fact that the AKC does not recognize the red or the black Airedale, I don’t see why if someone wants one of these Airedales they shouldn’t have one. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

Plus, I really think the main attraction of the Airedale is not the coloring so much as it is the personality and traits of the breed itself.

Of all the Airedales I saw at this breeders facility, Eric the red Airedale was not only one of the largest Airedales there, he had the standard fun-loving, happy demeanor as is common with all the Airedale terriers. Also, just look at his face in the video, how can you not love this big fun-loving animal? Continue reading “Red Airedale Terrier”

Black Airedale Terrier

The black Airedale Terrier

Quite a few local Airedale Terrier owners that I’ve talked to here in San Diego, didn’t seem to realize that there was an all black Airedale Terrier. But, the reality is that they have been around for quite some time. Although not recognized by the AKC, through registration into their system, the fact remains that they exist and have exactly the same characteristics as the standard black and tan Airedales.  Black Airedale Terrier *CORRECTION to video -The breeder has been breeding Airedales for 33 years!

So, if you love Airedale Terriers, and can appreciate and all black Airedale Terrier, you definitely have an opportunity to stand out from the crowd by owning one of these fun-loving intelligent animals. Continue reading “Black Airedale Terrier”

Best Dog Hikes San Diego

Best Dog Hikes San Diego

San Diego best dog trails – Cowles Mountain is at the Eastern side of the city of San Diego, it borders La Mesa and Santee.

The main trail starts at the corner of Navajo Rd, and Golfcreast Dr.. This is a very popular and busy trail. Because it’s narrow, I would NOT recommend it with the dog, because you always end up pulling the dog over so people can get by. Plus, if you’re like me and you looking for little serenity on the trail this front trail is not for you because of all the people and even little kids it’s very noisy.

The Barker Way Trail on the east side of the mountain is really a much better trail for enjoying your hike, and the only trail I would recommend for taking your dog.

The one-way distance from the trailhead, which is right off Parker Way, is 1.6 miles. The parks department rates this trail as moderate. It takes me, about 45 to 55 minutes to get to the summit. Continue reading “Best Dog Hikes San Diego”

Dog Safety

Dog Safety

We love our pets. And we spend big bucks to keep them safe and healthy. But do the things we buy really work? Marketplace investigates pet safety products, putting them to the test and revealing why they could put your pet, and your family, at risk.

Keep in mind that these tests were done in 2013. So, now five years later I’m positive other companies have improved or made much better dog harnesses. the only harness during these five year old tests that passed was called the Sleepypod Clickit Utility.

Personally I have looked at a lot of these dog auto restraint harnesses and now see that a number of them are tested to the same standards as child restraint systems. Basically, the majority of the new dog safety car restraint systems are tested with about an 80 pound dog in a 30 mile an hour crash. Continue reading “Dog Safety”

Animal Prosthetics

Animal Prosthetics

This is AMAZING, thank you for spending the time to help these animals. You make the world a better place. Seeing all the dogs and cats and sheep all running happily just makes me feel so happy!  Animal Prosthetics:

This looks like the world of animal prosthetics and technological innovations give our favorite furry animals a second chance at a care-free life. the only real downside here is that prosthetic limbs are so expensive, they generally cost an arm or a leg.

There’s been an advance in human prosthetics with the introduction of myoelectrics and targeted muscle re-innervation. I’ll leave the research up to you on what both are. As for the people who looked the term up, there is an open source myoelectric prosthetic hand that costs $300 to make, which is drastically cheaper than most if not all others, so it should be just as cheep to build one for animals. The only potential problem I see so far in designing the myoelectric ones for animals is that, for those who would need the targeted muscle re-innervation surgery for it to work, the smaller the animal is, the more accurate they’d have to be with the surgery. Have we gotten past this surgical limitation? Cause I really don’t know. Continue reading “Animal Prosthetics”

Larger Airedale Terriers

Larger Airedale Terriers talking

My two larger Airedale Terriers, Annie and Oakley. Airedale Terriers are great, perhaps the greatest dog ever, but, the larger Airedale Terrier is definitely the king of the Terriers!

Airedales weigh approximately 50-80 pounds, being active and agile enough to perform well, while not too small to function as a physical deterrent, retriever or hunter. Some breeders have produced larger Airedale Terriers, such as the ‘Oorang Airedale’, developed in the 1920s. Continue reading “Larger Airedale Terriers”

Larger Airedales

Larger Airedales

The larger Airedale Terriers are known as Mountain Airedales or Oorang Airedales.

Even though these larger Airedale Terriers could be AKC registered, because they are so far beyond the breed standard measurements, they would not be allowed to enter any AKC sanctioned dog shows. But, how many of you were considering purchasing or larger Airedale Terrier to enter into dog shows anyway?

Personally, I feel that the larger Airedale Terrier is the ideal size companion dog. My male dog in this video is Oakley and he currently weighs in at 99 pounds! The smaller female, Annie, weighs in at 55 pounds. I realize there are a lot of detractors out there who pooh-pooh the larger Airedale Terrier, but the fact is that there are many who believe the AKC should formalize standards for the larger Airedale breed.  Continue reading “Larger Airedales”

Airedale Terrier Summer Safety Tips

Airedale Terrier Summer Safety Tips

When summer comes around, you have to put a little more thought into ensuring the safety of your dog.

My Airedales like to drink a lot of water every day, and that’s especially true after a long hike. But, it’s important to also bring water with you so they can have a drink along the way. I always trim my dogs coats in the spring so that they are much cooler through the spring and summer seasons. Here in the Western United States you also have to keep on the lookout for rattlesnakes. Rattlesnakes are usually out early in the morning and later in the day as the sun starts to set. They’re not going to attack you or your dogs but they sure will bite your dogs if curiosity gets the dogs too close. Continue reading “Airedale Terrier Summer Safety Tips”

Homeless Dog

Homeless Dog

For this dog to be acting like this someone must have been abusing her her previous owners or someone on the street that’s truly sad that dogs are scared to come to humans when someone’s trying to help this animal my heart goes out to her I wish I had a animal control place all the animals would feel safe they would get plenty all things needed for each every one it breaks my heart that this dog sounds as if she’s in pain so many cruel people in this world u wouldn’t want someone to mistreat you that way so why do this to a helpless dog??

Homeless Dog

Rain was scared and expressed it in a way that I have never heard in my life! Her cry was heartbreaking, and I am so happy that Carey Linnell called Hope For Paws and asked for help. Her ears were eaten by flies, her coat was filthy, and I can’t imagine what caused her to be so fearful. Loreta Frankonyte was able to secure her, calm her down, and I initiated the first contact while Loreta was ready to pull her away from me if needed. Continue reading “Homeless Dog”
