Dog Attack – How to Stop it
Here are some of the latest statistics on dog attacks in the United States, drawing from various sources, with the most recent data generally referring to 2023 or 2024:
Overall Dog Bites and Injuries:
- Approximate Number of Bites: Around 4.5 million dog bites occur each year in the United States.
- Medical Attention Needed: Approximately 800,000 of these bites require medical attention.
- Emergency Care: Nearly 1,000 U.S. citizens require emergency care treatment for serious dog bite injuries daily.
- Reconstructive Surgery: In 2023, 19,201 people underwent reconstructive surgery due to serious dog bite injuries. In 2022, this number was over 18,817.
- Children as Victims: Children are disproportionately affected, accounting for a significant percentage of bites, with many being severely injured (especially to the head and neck).
- Known Dogs: In most dog bite cases, the victim knew the dog that bit them.
- Unneutered Male Dogs: 60-80% of US dog bites happen from unneutered (male) dogs. Unneutered dogs are 2.6 times more likely to bite people and other dogs.
Fatal Dog Attacks:
- Annual Fatalities: The number of fatal dog attacks in the United States varies, but generally ranges from 30 to 50 people each year.
- 2023 Fatalities: Some sources report 58 dog attack fatalities in 2023, while others indicate 63. The CDC reported 96 fatalities in 2023.
- 2022 Fatalities: The CDC recorded 98 fatal dog attacks in 2022, which was the highest number ever reported in a single year by CDC data.
- Victim Demographics: Infants, young children (especially those under 4 or under 9), and the elderly are most at risk of fatal dog attacks. In 2022, children aged one to four accounted for 29.4% of fatalities, and those under 17 accounted for 56.7%.
- Multi-Dog Attacks: In 2023, 54% of fatalities were due to multi-dog attacks.
Breed-Specific Data (Important Note on Interpretation):
- Pit Bull and Rottweiler Involvement: Pit bull and Rottweiler attacks combined account for a significant percentage of fatal attacks. For example, in 2023, 65% of fatalities were caused by pit bulls. From 2010-2023, they accounted for 76% of fatal attacks.
- Breed as a Predictor: While certain breeds are frequently identified in severe bite cases, it’s important to note that many organizations, including the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), state that breed alone is not an accurate predictor of whether a dog will bite or of bite severity. They emphasize that preventable factors related to irresponsible ownership, neglect, and inadequate supervision are primary causes of dog bite-related fatalities.
Insurance Claims:
- Cost of Claims: In 2024, homeowners insurers paid out $1.56 billion in liability claims related to dog bites and other dog-related injuries.
- Average Cost Per Claim: The average cost per dog bite claim in the U.S. in 2023 was $58,545. The average cost per claim has significantly increased over the past decade due to rising medical costs and larger settlements.
- States with Most Claims: California and Florida consistently have the highest number of dog bite claims. In 2023, California had 2,104 claims and Florida had 1,532.
Other Notable Statistics:
- Postal Service Employees: Incidents involving dog attacks on U.S. Postal Service employees rose to more than 6,000 cases in 2024.
- Infections: An estimated 15% to 20% of dog bite wounds become infected.
It’s crucial to remember that statistics can vary slightly between different sources due to varying methodologies and data collection periods.
