Airedale Puppy Tail Docking

Airedale Puppy Tail Docking

Two day old Airedale Terriers at the Vet for tail docking and Dewclaw removal.

This is what the AKC says on the subject of tail docking and dewclaw removal: Many owners of specific breeds wish to maintain their dog’s historic practical function by having their puppy’s ears cropped, tails docked, or dewclaws removed. While some unfamiliar with the breeds believe that this is purely aesthetic, these procedures actually enhance the dog’s ability to perform the tasks it is meant to do. Yes, on 1-2-2019 in the afternoon all nine puppies were born from about 2:58 PM to 11:50 PM.

After the first few days of birth, I went back to letting Annie naturally feed her pups. Well, in just 3 days, I would say it was a partial success. Now, for you folks who believe in letting things go all natural, I’m sorry to say I did have to intervene to help Annie out, but, just during the first few days..

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

The Airedale is the largest of the British terriers. They weigh 19–25 kilograms (42–55 lb) in fit condition and have a height at the withers of 58–61 centimetres (23–24 in) for males, with females slightly smaller. The American Kennel Club standard specifies a very slightly smaller dog. Larger Airedales, up to 55 kilograms (121 lb) can sometimes be found in North America. I guess for Annie, feeding nine newborn pups was a bit much. On the second day, she would actually walk out or hesitate even walking into the whelping area. So, I decided to intervene on nature’s way, and feed the pups about every two hours, but not all at once. I’ve been keeping the pups in a separate blanket lined container and taking five out for the first shift and then the other four for the second shift.

The Airedale Terrier is the largest and toughest of the terrier family. Its coat is dense and wiry, with a softer undercoat, and comes in both tan and black and tan and grizzle. This breed was one of the first used for police duty and has also been popular among U.S. Presidents (e.g., Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, and Warren Harding).

Airedale Terrier – Physical Characteristics

The long-legged Airedale Terrier has strong round bones that effectively combine power and agility. This enables the breed to hunt difficult game. The wiry, hard, and thick coat lies close and straight with the body, while a few hairs remain crinkled. Continue reading “Airedale Terrier Dog Breed”
